Video: Shiitake Mushroom Plugging

Forestry isn't all about cutting down timber and making lumber.  There are many ways to add value to your forest by using wood that would otherwise only be good for firewood.  Here Jerry Becker of http://www.wildriverstimber.com takes us through the process of preparing oak logs for hosting Shiitake Mushrooms -- which can then be sold at the farmers market or used to make pizza, spaghetti -- you name it.

Shiitake Spore plugs are pounded into oak logs that are waxed and soaked on a wooden frame.  Over the next six to twelve months these logs will begin sprouting mushrooms that can be harvested.  If things go  right these logs can keep producing for many years.
